Civil/WASH Engineer

About the role

World Vision is hiring a Civil/WASH Engineer on a local fixed-term contract in Manzini, Eswatini. The engineer provides technical leadership, engineering design and implementation oversight for water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure projects, ensuring they meet approved technical standards, stay within budget and finish on schedule. The role works closely with project staff, government stakeholders, contractors, consultants and partners, and requires frequent field travel and occasional work outside normal office hours.

Key responsibilities

• Carry out water resources and needs assessments, field and topographical surveys, and prepare maps, layouts and engineering drawings.
• Develop technical designs, specifications, bills of quantities and tender documents, and review designs, proposals and contractor reports.
• Monitor construction progress, quality, scope, timelines and budget, and inspect completed works before certification and payment.
• Prepare weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual progress reports, technical briefs and monitoring reports for management and donors.
• Liaise with local authorities, government departments, service providers and contractors, and represent World Vision in WASH coordination meetings and tender committees.
• Support recruitment and mentoring of Water Technicians, and build the capacity of project teams and communities on operation and maintenance of WASH infrastructure.

Required profile

• Degree in Water Engineering, Civil Engineering, Irrigation Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Public Health Engineering, Environmental Engineering or a related discipline.
• At least 1 to 3 years of experience implementing WASH projects, including design, supervision and monitoring of water and sanitation infrastructure.
• Experience working with communities, government institutions, contractors and development partners.
• Committed Christian able to work across denominational backgrounds.

Required skills

• Proficiency in AutoCAD, GIS and other modelling and simulation tools.
• Project planning, budgeting and contract management.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical specifications.
• Strong written and verbal communication, negotiation and problem-solving skills.
